Agony: The Life and Death of Rasputin [New DVD] Subtitled, Widescreen
    Mar 20, 2019
Excellent movie, not so excellent transfer by Kino.
If you are a fan of Russian cinema, this is one of the few movies available from one of the best directors, Elem Klimov. It is as haunting and vital as ever, and a very ornate and tempestuous glimpse at particular part of Russian history. This film, as well as Come and See, are essential movies to own. That being said, because of it's lack of availability I must be hard on Kino's terrible transfer. It is still great to see the film, but the technicals of this particular release is not without it's drawbacks, and that is all on Kino's terrible quality transfer. Kino should give it's Russian catalogue to Criterion, like Stalker. However, in order to see the film we, alas, must suffer through Kino's backward blunderings.

Very good slow burning character study and deconstruction of the mythic west.
Great movie, beautiful music, solid performances and lovely imagery. Blu ray looks really good.
