sub-standard dvd recorder
i bought it new, my first dvd recorder. It would often freeze when I tried to record something. As it was often unresponsive, i returned it.

OK DVD Recorder With average VHS section
I bought this second hand. I knew Pioneer made good DVD Recorders from previous experience.Sure enough, I had few problems with it and picture quality was good. My main complaint was it was priced higher as it was a combo unit. And the VHS section was only average in quality. I would have saved money if I had just bought a better quality VHS player and hooked it up to a lower cost Pioneer DVD Recorder for tape to disc transfer.

worked well about 3 years, and with good recording quality
I bought one of these Pioneer 233 models in 2005, the medium price range was attractive. Impressive audio adjustment options. Good picture quality .Had it working/recording full time for 3 years before it slowed down, then lasted another one to two years. Apparently if you use the 8X speed blank DVD media you get more mileage out of the laser. Instead I used 16X which may have shortened the lifespan.. Shame these DVD recorders are not made new for the most part any more. The 233 and other Pioneer models, fortunately, have burners which can be 'swapped out' when worn down.
