Not Your Typical Jim Carrey!
2 of 2 found this helpful I didn't think I would like the Truman Show. I was expecting Jim Carrey over the top humour and contorted faces. I was wrong. Really wrong! The Truman Show is the epitome of "reality shows" (and hopefully our own reality shows will never go as far). Truman grows up as the unknowing star of his own reality show. Everything is television, and nothing is real-- even though it's real to Truman. Jim Carrey is brilliant as Truman, and Ed Harris plays the steely and yet passionate producer/director/'god' watching over Truman. I liked this movie because it really showed off some of the uglier parts of what television can be, but also made distinct that the beautiful parts of our lives, like love, are real no matter what. Give this movie a shot. It's dramatic and moving and funny, and NOT you typical Jim Carrey film. Yay!

A Relaxing Sci Fi
1 of 2 found this helpful The trouble is with any sci fi movie from pre 2000 is that our expectations of all the graphics and effects is really high, so it's easy to be disappointed with older science fiction movies like Stargate. This is the version that is not connected with any of the television series, either, so avid fans may not like this version, either. Not having watched the series, I myself can't really compare.
However, if we look at Stargate independently from all the franchises and try not to bemoan the less than glitzy effects, then it is a rather enjoyable movie. We travel through the gate to ancient times where a nerdy anthropologist type is in anthropology heaven, meeting the ancient cultures he's so avidly studied. Of course the military is involved in this venture, not to mention some ancient aliens to complete the deal. There is some good adventure, some decent action, and a good story to keep you entertained throughout. Are there some cliches and archetypal characters? Of course, but I find myself not really bothered by them. It's not on my top ten sci fi loves, but it is something I enjoy pulling off the shelf and watching again from time to time.

Surprise Yourself! To Watch It is to Love It

(George Clooney is so unrecognizably good that even if you're not a fan, you'll fall in love anyway!) 'O Brother' combines rich scenery, vivid characters, and dialogue that ranges from witty and sharp to slow and southern to profound and soulful, and best of all, an UNforgettable, vibrant, and often haunting soundtrack that whisks you into the heart of the south. Don't pass up this movie. It'll surprise you as it creeps into your top ten list.
