Amen to Lilies of the Field
Classic film that should be in every movie lover's collection. Sidney Poitier, the key star of this film, was a relatively new and upcoming star back in the 1960s. This film really gave him good visibility and showcased his acting talent. He is absolutely charming as an itinerant handyman who stops by to help a colony of indigent German nuns who migrated to the midwest to develop land donated to the order.
He bridges the gap between his Baptist upbringing and the nuns Catholicism by teaching the nuns to speak English and engages them in a memorable song called Amen. He ends up being snokkered into a building a "shapel" (meaning chapel) as the stern Mother Superior calls it. He is gratified by the whole experience of self-giving which inspires others to help build the shapel. Amen.

Superb Collection of Christmas Movies for Literature Lovers and Romantics!
I bought this collection as a gift for a fellow writer and literature lover who loves to watch romantic Christmas movies with her husband. The key attraction of this collection was the hard-to find-movie as a single DVD in American format - An Old Fashioned Christmas. This movie is a sequel to the movie An Old Fashioned Thanksgiving (based on Louisa May Alcott's short story) which was a very nice film about the Ellis family in New England area in colonial America in the late 1800's. The stories feature a young aspiring writer Tillie Basset and her wealthy widowed grandmother. In this sequel, Tillie and her grandmother visit Ireland and Tillie becomes enamored with the son of an Irish noble family who are financially struggling but are keeping up pretenses. Tillie also gets to to me he deceased father's beloved Irish grandfather and uncle. If you enjoy literature, this move is a must see and keeper. My friend loved the DVD! Wish there were more to buy. Highly recommend it!
