How it was meant to be heard
When the Beatles embarked upon the Let It Be project, the idea was to strip down to basics and be a rock-and-roll band again. The movie was meant to show a hard working band go from song ideas and rehearsals while we, the audience, got to be the fly on the wall. The movie ends with the now legendary rooftop concert, where we see the Beatles return to their roots and and play rock-and-roll. Psychedelia and studio wizardry had nothing to do with this project.
Like many people my age, I grew up with the heavily produced Phil Spector version of the soundtrack. I suppose he felt he should bring in some of the orchestral touches that George Martin might’ve added, but Phil’s wall-of-sound handling was miles away from Martin’s finesse.
Finally, fans can hear the raw honestly of these tracks without the distractions. These songs are so much more powerful and vivid in their “naked” form, the way the Beatles intended them to be.
