Solid man, great player, Dwight Evans.
Dwight 'Dewey' Evans gives us the extraordinary account of his disturbing life as the parent of 2 children suffering from recurrent and ultimately fatal brain tumors, while most teammates, even the great Jim Rice never knew. Dwight had a superb career nonetheless which he recounts with vivid detail. The fact is that Dwight aged like fine wine on the ball field, it was his refuge from the pain of his tragic fatherhood. His career is summed up best by 2 truths. He was the best defensive outfielder in the American League and in the 80's he put it all together as a hitter and led the major leagues in extra base hits during the decade of the 1980's. A true menace in any clutch opportunity post season or late innings of any regular season game. Dwight should be awarded a bust in Cooperstown, but never once would you hear him complain or do anything but go about his business as an unselfish all-star overshadowed by flashier individuals. I always considered him a great player but now I have a picture of what a solid man he was and always will be.
