The Best Locomotive
While I haven't tried any of the Shay locomotives in N scale that came before this, I do know that this one works very well and just based on pictures I have seen it seems to be the best looking. Even though it isn't actually driven by the gearing, the gearing is driven by the wheels so it does move. It's amazing to watch the tiny gears move in a manner very similar to the real thing. I's even possible (but difficult) to put a decoder in this little tank engine. Because of the solid metal frame/boiler, this locomotive has some decent mass for its size and although I haven't tested it, I would imagine it has good pulling power. It is my favorite locomotive purchase, right up there with the 2-8-0 Spectrum. Worth the money. If you really want DCC though, I would recommend getting it from somewhere that will install the DCC for you (like THT or similar); it could potentially save a lot of time/stress/money (I actually had to attempt several times to get it right).
