Telephone Modems are still useful.
These are old, slow modems but they are still useful for local data networks where not much data is being transported. The wiring is simpler than Ethernet even if I use my own PBX ($80 Amazon.) Some amount of lightning (surge) protection is built into the telephone standard, just as some, if lesser is built into Ethernet. My network will collect Solar intensity data (watt/m^2) and some weather.

New life for old telephone modems.
I still use these modems to set up my own private data networks using my own PBX. A pair of wires will carry a telephone signal farther than RS232 will. In addition, with the modems error correction is built in.
