"It's not fear that tears you apart... it's him!"
This seriously has to be one of my favorite taglines from a horror film ever, right up there with Halloween's "The night he came home" and Alien's "In space no one can hear you scream." And we know how great those two movies are and the mark they made in the genre.
But unlike some of the undisputed classics in the genre, this movie was is more obscure and difficult to buy. As an Italian film marked as a video nasty very early on in its life, it suffered from various cuts due to its grisly and disturbing content. Due to all this, getting the version I wanted to buy was very difficult and, unfortunately, costly. However, now that I own it, I am very happy that I no longer have to watch the watered-down "Grim Reaper" version that removes a few of the nasty bits this film has to offer.
While the movie is overly gory in a few spots (the cover should tell you that much), I don't think it's as gory as the stuff released in this day in age. In fact, the overall story is firmly planted in suspenseful-slasher territory despite it being called a 'Zombi' film in some areas. The same basic storytelling of any old-school slice-'N'-dice film you've ever seen is at play here... a madman offing a group of tourists one by one until our heroine is all that remains to survive is not an original concept, but this is one of those rare slashers that put a group of adults in harm's way rather than your typical group of horny, drunken teenagers. And the film fares better for it, I feel.
If you watched 'The Grim Reaper' version like I did the first time I ever saw this, you will feel a bit cheated just because the uncut film's finale is so disgusting/shocking by comparison compared to the anticlimatic one of the cut version's. If you're looking for this movie, 'Anthropophagus: The Grim Reaper' is THE version to see and own, if any.
