Broke the first week

It's a great coffeemaker, unfortunately it broke the first the second week we had it -- a pieces of rubber came from somewhere inside the machine and plugged the filter holder. We removed the pieces of rubber and the coffeemaker brewed along fine -- albeit rather slowly -- for a couple more weeks, then stopped brewing again. Our guess is the check valve is broken and the boiling water isn't getting enough pressure to get up and over into the filter basket. Since this is a refurbished model I am guessing this was the problem that send it back to the manufacturer.
