worked well until it didn't

This tool worked well for a few months trimming my yard - about 20 minutes work every 2 or 3 weeks. After that the string constantly was binding and not being fed as it should. Tried everything, including buying the stupidly overpriced pre-wound spools, which worked, but refilling the spool never worked after a few months.
