Properly cooked waffles at last!
I have been developing and tweaking a waffle recipe for many years. I have had several waffle makers during that time, and although I liked the result from them, I always felt it could be better. The results were delicious but never quite crispy enough on the outside unless cooked to the point of charring, and always too moist on the inside. The resulting waffles were quite thin.
I understand that my recipe results in a batter that is very difficult to cook properly.
The Breville smart waffle maker meets and exceeds the challenge my recipe poses. The waffles are not overcooked, they are crispy and fluffy with a slightly moist center, and they are about twice as thick as any I have ever been able to make.
I think the secret is that the heating coils are embedded in the waffle plates. This makes the appliance potentially difficult to clean, but with care and following the manufacturer's suggestions, the unit doesn't get dirty.
The non-stick coating is about the most effective I have ever encountered.
It's heavy and bulky, but I think that is because it is properly engineered to work effectively. I don't mind at all as long as the result is so good.
The "smart" aspect of the unit is also great. It really does calculate timing and temperature and allows one to remove one batch and add another without rushing or having to worry about temperature variation.
One recommendation I have: Keep a plastic knife with the machine. The cooked waffles can be a bit difficult to loosen, and prying out with a metal utensil could damage the non-stick coating.

Authentic looking
Obviously I am not any sort of expert regarding the fine points of Japanese temple architecture, but this miniature is strongly reminiscent of portals to temple courtyards II saw on my visits to quite a few temples in Tokyo and southern Japan.
It makes a convincing backdrop to my collection of miniature Toshikane idiomatic porcelain characters. Even the scale is fortuitously correct.
The quality is excellent - solid and quite heavy. The detail is very fine too.
All in all, I am very pleased with this acquisition.
