Great character lists, but lacking in comprehensive story mode.
Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations is overall a good game. With its large selection of characters, it is perfect for sitting down with some friends and just having a blast. The fighting system is simple enough to pick up quickly, but deep enough that there is a strategy aspect to higher level fights. The inclusion on Japanese voices is great for fans of the series, especially because the English voices can be rather silly sometimes, i.e., Naruto. The negative aspects of the game are brought to the forefront. The Storm series of this long running game series has progressivly cutting down their story mode. The 1st one had a full 3-D representaion of Konoha that was huge and filled with fun stuff to do. That was great, and I wish that this one had something that engrossing. The last one cut down on that, but made it like early Final Fantasy games, with a map painting or image that the characters moved around in like a scene shot. It was less, but they worked it so that there was a huge amount of stuff to do, I sunk many hours just running around doing side-quests. But this game, went away from any kind of story mode. Instead it is more like an arcade mode, you get fights lined up that relate to a character you pick. There are image sets with dialoge over it that is supposed to substitute for an actual story mode. It is far too short and does not do anything but set up fights. I was very disappointed in this aspect of the game. The other is the new substitution bar, only giving you five substitutions before you have to wait and charge up. In previous games it was simply a timed dodge that consumed chakra. It took some skill to successfully dodge an attack, now it is very, very simple. Also, with the bar at the tip, you know how many you can pull off, and how many your opponent can. So it becomes a string of getting the right number advantage over your opponent. The AI doesn't use it all the time, but players online use it every chance they can. Making it about numbers and not skill and timing. I think this is the worst inclusion into the fighting system, which had been simple and easy to pick up.
