    Beautiful placemats
These paper placemats are gorgeous. It's a pleasure to decorate our table with them. They're substantial, and each one can be used for many, many days if one is careful about spilling things. They brighten the whole room.
The Lost Colony of Roanoke Hardcover Thomas Preston

Riveting story told by a master
This is a fascinating story, told compellingly by one of the great history writers for children and young adults. Jean Fritz explores thoroughly the mystery of the colonists who disappeared from Roanoke Island in the 16th century and offers the most plausible solutions to the puzzle. Great reading for kids who are interested in the early history of white settlement in this country.
The Church Mice At Christmas (Picturemac) by Oakley, Graham Paperback Book The

A whimsical Christmas book that will never get old
This is one of a series of charming (and very British) picture books about a group of mice living in a church rectory, with their friend the church cat and the vicar. In this book the mice want to celebrate Christmas with a feast but will have to raise money to afford it. All of their fund-raising efforts go awry, but they inadvertently thwart a burglary, thus earning a reward in the form of a large hamper of party food. The illustrations are detailed and delightful. It was a favorite of my son in the 1980s and I was excited to find a copy in near-perfect condition this year to give to young child in the family. It's a Christmas book for the ages.
