Haunting

This is a nonfiction accounting of John Vann's behavior as well as an indictment of General Westmoreland's prosecution of the war. The book illuminates how ingrained corruption by the ARVN and an aversion to fighting the Communists doomed the chance for a military victory. The author outlines Vann's personal and professional life and his extraordinary rise to the equivalent rank of a two star general. The author frames the war in history from 1945, through the US and French involvement and the patience of the Communist North to wear down the US as Ho Chi Minh did the French. The book is a testament to John Vann's fighting spirit and to the many brave men who flew the helicopters and fought the ground and air war. The author illustrates the political action of LBJ's war policies. A serious read at 800 pages.
