A Nice Change From "In The Box!"
After 25+ years of DAW mixing with a mouse and keyboard, I'm really enjoying the hands-on approach to using my DAW. Most of my audio workflow centers around recording and mixing live bands in a multitrack format. I record with a console, but have always mixed only with the computer. Using the Mackie MCU Pro has given me a more intuitive feel for the music as I'm mixing it, in addition to speeding up the workflow a bit. I particularly like the transport controls, and being able to tap the rewind button to go back 10 seconds when I miss something or want to listen to it again.
I knew there would be a learning curve with weaning myself off of the mouse and keyboard, so I wrote up a cheat sheet of the commands I would use most often, and keep it by the console as I work. After a week, I rarely had to look at it.
There are still things that are just easier and faster with the mouse and keyboard. For my typical workflow, that's the intial setup; naming and ordering the tracks, adding the appropriate plugins and their initial settings. But once I get to the actual mix, the Mackie MCU Pro shines! Now I'm thinking about getting an extender pack.
