Hidden gem that may just be flawless!
I have a strong male voice and have been singing for over 40 years. For live performance I have used and still have; Shure SM57, SM58, Beta 58A, Beta 87A, Sennheiser 845's, Sennheiser MD431 profipower, AKG D3800, D3900, C5900. They all do the job well with obvious differences but none of them make me feel as good as I do when I use this mic! Seriously, it's not about the frequency curve or specs...it just sounds great and feels great. It's solid AKG quality and feels like it. It is a condenser mic and so requires Phantom power (which most mixers provide now), and I would compare it with the other condensers I have; the AKG C5900 and the Shure Beta 87A. It sounds better than both of them and has much better feedback rejection! Although the older C5900 is a great mic and has more flexible bass cut switching, this mic has a little edge over it and doesn't need the extra eq. It also has a 6db boost switch should you ever need it - I don't. In terms of the Shure Beta 87A there's no comparison IMO. The Shure feels light with a thin body and "flat" grill face which I never enjoyed - sound was ok but didn't make me fall in love with it - so I sold it. This one is a keeper - in fact I use it all the time now. The only time I use any of the other mics is if I'm playing through a system without phantom power. I love finding "hidden gems" on ebay and this is certainly one of them. AKG are a reputable company but for some reason are not singers first choices when it comes to live performance. I think that's just because they've never used one!
But it's not just a great live mic - it's great for recording as well! If you have a home recording setup and only have the budget for one mic - try this - it really is quality! I honestly can't think of one negative to say about this mic.
There's no point in talking about the taste of fine wine - you have to drink it to discover it. Same with mics - Try it - and especially if you can find a bargain on ebay! I'd happily pay £50-£120 for another. Not that I need another mic.
