A book that shows its age in looks, but is still as mysterious and inventive as when it was new.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a great book, and perhaps the most solid in the latter half of the original series (both Goblet and Order being a bit too long). The mysteries at hand are intriguing and are interesting to theorize about while reading: the identity of the "Half-Blood Prince", what was Draco ordered to do and how is Snape helping him, and the long-awaited answers about Voldemort's past. But we also have budding romance and heartbreak, a great dose of humor and some memorable characters that are either introduced or given a moment to shine.
The Children's Edition paperback I got shows its age, being previously used, and it is advisable to be careful with its spine, but it still looks beautiful, and perhaps even more dignified with its yellowed pages.

Awesome children's novel; great value for a period-accurate hardcover.
First of all: the one I got was not a Bloomsbury hardcover, but a Ted Smart 2nd printing from, I believe, 1998. Apart from some age related wear (the dust jacket is a bit wrinkled, and the union between the last pages and the endpapers is worn), it's in great condition, no missing or damaged pages.
About the novel: what can be said about this book that hasn't been said in 25 years? It's charming, fun, witty, and the main mystery of the year is great. We get to know a bit about magic world history from before Harry's time, and new characters make a lasting impression, while Harry, Ron and Hermione's friendship develops in a believable way.

20 years later, still essential to the Harry Potter saga.
Even if this is the longest book in the Harry Potter series, it doesn't feel that long. Everything here happens for a reason, and even the most inconsequential episodes help build Rowling's characters. And I feel it's appropiate that the longest book is the one where the school is taken over by the overly sacharine tyrant that is Dolores Umbridge; a character so vile that you will end up hating her more than Voldemort (at least for a while).
If Goblet gave us the starting point for the second half of the series, Order deepens our understanding of what it was like the first time he was around and how it affected people, and how the wizard community is taking his return.
