Light on an understudied subject.

Utterly reliable, although gadget-lovers will dislike lack of 'extras'.
I love this little unit, which came out in 1999 or 2000. More recent models have more whistles and bells and, of course, USB cables (which were not available when this model came out), but "Old Yellow's" simplicity and reliability is legendary.
It is a hand-held GPS, which tells you exactly where you are on the earth's surface, and at what altitude, down to a few meters accuracy. The settings can be easily altered to display latitude/longitude or any of scores of regional map datums, such as Ordnance Survey grid references.
The battery life with two ordinary Duracells is 20+ hours when left continuously on.
The yellow casing is very welcome as it make the unit easy to spot when left or dropped in the grass or rocks, and the rubber surround gives it a nice feel in the hand and also means it stays put when on the car dashboard!
Those are the pros. On the cons side, (1) the backlight is dim compared to later models (however, but in my experience this is an advantage as looking at a brightly lit screen at night is unwelcome and unnecessary), and (2) it does not have an electronic compass, although I also don't mind this as I much prefer to use a manual compass.
So, I really like this model. I've had a few different models through my hands, buying and selling on eBay, but I still prefer my 'old yellow' when out and about.

Excellent, excellent, excellent.
1 of 1 found this helpful This is the bees knees of GPSs. I've handled a variety of models as a hobby buyer-and-seller of GPSs, and the CSX is the best I have ever had.
Pros:
* Solid as a rock. The one weak point is the rubber-encased button on the top, which wears thru if you have long fingernails.
* Incredibly sensitive. I live on the ground floor of an apartment block, yet it tracks me inside the building.
* Size and weight. A criticism somethime levelled at it is the the relative bulkiness of the item, but I find this and advantage, especially in cold weather when the hands and fingers do not manage the smaller units so well.
* Price. 300+ pounds (500+ dollars) when launched, but now pick-upable for under 100 if you hunt around.
Cons:
* None really, it's pretty good. My one quibble is that the four-way central button is frustrating at times, not always responding well. A joystick such as on a Venture Cx would have been better.
* Display is 256 colours, so not photo quality. On the other hand, having walked in freezing weather with watering eyes, I prefer the primary colours of the CSX.
Conclusion:
* This is the GPS Harrods would sell you (if it was still available). It's been replaced by the GPS62, Etrex 20 & 30, etc. These have equally impressive performance, but at the same time have a more 'plastic' or 'toy' feel. The CSX simply was, and still is, excellent.
