    Fury Beach/Ray Edinger/2003
A very well written and unbiased account of Sir John Ross's 1829 to 1833 expedition in search of the Northwest Passage. Although he failed (as he expected) to find the passage, his nephew did lead an overland expedition that discovered the Magnetic North Pole and they charted much unknown territory. They also established a cordial working relationship with the local Inuit, which is a focal point of this book. A story of common sense heroism as the crew walked and rowed their way to rescue after surviving four years north of 70 degrees when their ship was hopelessly trapped in the ice. Also an in depth review of the personalities and "politics" of Arctic exploration in the first half of the nineteenth century. An easy read and very enjoyable, and highly accurate. Definitely above average when compared to similar works, both current and past.

The Arctic: A Guide to Coastal Wildlife by Soper/Powell
Clearly written account of the kinds of wildlife one might reasonably expect to see on or near the shore in the Far North. As it was written in the UK, there is a decidedly European bias geographically, but since the Arctic is pretty much continuous from continent to continent and the species are too, this doesn't much matter. A point very much in its favor is that the illustrations of the animals are watercolors, which are much more like what an observer will see in the wild, rather than the razor sharp depictions seen in most guides. Weakest point is botany, but that topic actually deserves its own volume.

Eighteen Tailor Made Track Plans/John Armstrong/1983
John Armstrong was probably the most famous of all track plan designers, and for a number of years ran a business designing custom layouts to his clients' specifications. This book is a selection of the ones he found the most challenging. It includes all of his famous wit and wisdom, and contains many nuggets that have a wide application. You can always find something useful to help solve problems with your own design, whether you're operationally oriented or interested in scenic treatments. A useful addition to any model railroader's library. Get a copy if you can.
