A civil war film like no other
2 of 2 found this helpful PHARAOH’S ARMY:
I had never heard of this film until very recently when I stumbled upon the title while searching out other films about war history. I didn’t know much more about it, other than it was an independent film made by a young filmmaker. I, being a film student still in the university and quickly drawn to independent films, was intrigued enough to purchase the film. I popped the film in pretty late one night thinking I'd just watch the first little bit to see what it was like, hoping I hadn't made a bad choice with my spontaneous purchase.
After a few minutes, I was already impressed with the filmmaking, cinematography, acting, and character development. I knew I should get some sleep, but I gave in and watched the entire film. It was excellent. I couldn't stop watching. The message is so multilayered and deep - the characters are so flawed, real, and easy to relate to.
Never before had a film about the American Civil War caused within me so much to think about. Before this film I had never pondered so deeply the horrors of war in general - how much innocence is lost when one person has to kill another - but especially the horrors of this particular war where the person killed is a fellow countryman - a neighbor, a relative, a friend. The film also explores the kind of negative effect war can have on the most innocent of bystanders – children.
Other issues addressed in this film include prejudice, hatred, and a different kind of “racism” than what one would expect from a film of the Civil War. The film is amazing, and should be viewed and discussed.
Since seeing this film, I have and will continue recommend it to anyone. It is one of the best movies I have ever seen.
