The Blackening - the best album yet by Machine Head!
This is a superb album - one of the best thrash metal albums ever released. The level of rage generated has taken the genre to a new level. The pace is relentless and the listener is assaulted with pounding drum and bass rhythms, guitar riffs and manic solos. The lyrical content demonstrates Flynn in his prime. The structure and style of the songs is always interesting and never repetetive. The solos by Demmel and Flynn show the virtuosity of guitarists at their best. Beautiful Mourning and Halo are the highlights of the album; I also like Now I Lay Thee Down. Flynn, Duce, McClain and Demmel deserve legendary status for this work. Can they get better?

Mechanical Animals - MM glam rock tribute to Bowie.
This album is one of MM's finest. As part 2 of the Antichrist Superstar trilogy, this album is musically less metal and much more electronic overall than parts 1 & 3. Anyone hoping for the Gothic sounds of the first two albums will be disappointed with this. As an artist, MM always seeks to be innovative. The main concept concerns the character Omega, an alien who falls to earth (or from Heaven) intent on preaching to the people through his power as a Holywood star, along with his band The Mechanical Animals, with his own nihilistic take on religion, and it is a tribute to Bowie, from the film The Man Who Fell To Earth. (MM even appears on the front cover with red hair from Bowie's Alladin Sane album) Overexposure in the public spotlight and excessive drug abuse cause the star to rapidly disintegrate and fall away. 7 songs are by Omega (the finished product) and are very cynical to people and their beliefs. 7 songs are by Alpha (the beginning, or MM himself) and express bitter disappointment in the way the world is. Despite the pop/rock melodies, the lyrics are still as offensively morbid and cynical as ever, are very witty, containing many double entendres, and from now on, the vocals would be sung in a Bowie style. (The track Rock Is Dead being a blatant tribute to The Jean Genie) The listener gets more value from playing the album in its entirety rather than selecting favourite tracks (this works for most albums) as the concept merits a deep understanding. My favourite tracks are: Rock Is Dead; I don't Like The Drugs (But The Drugs Like Me); and New Model No. 15. Also, the album sleeve and inner booklet is a work of art. Read the yellow scribbles through the blue plastic to reveal hidden messages - insane! The number 15 crops up oftenly - a lot to ponder. Overall, MM has been arguably the finest individual artist for over 15 years and Mechanical Albums is up there with his best!
