Falcon Eyes F7 Magnetic RGB LED Video Light +Softbox and Honeycomb Grid Dimmable
Nov 03, 2020
A nearly perfect, small, do-it-all LED panel
For the price, perhaps double that of a single-purpose, hi-cri panel, you get a lot: high output with long life (over a hour on 100%), fairly fast charging using the typical USB with what seems to be a heavy-duty cable, a pretty-wide range from 2500°K to 9000°K, and a bonus of 360° full color, full saturation to neutral lighting. And if you are into special effects, a dozen and a half for the fun of it! For several years, I've had a small, hi-cri, usb-charging light panel for run-and-gun work. The light quality is OK, though it's a single temp and I gel it to change it. What I liked is that it was small and always there. But, it was time to up the ante... I did a little research and found the Falcon Eyes F7 seemed like the best value and got one. It's small, thin, has a grid and a diffuser and the price, at least on eBay was reasonable. I gave it a try... The build is sturdy metal. It's more hearty and larger than my small panel, but the source is the entire face, not just a small section of my other panel and is quite thin. It's maybe the size of a deck and a half of playing cards and about the same thickness. Output is reasonable on full power and lasts for more than an hour, perhaps an hour and a half, but if you turn it down, you can still get pretty good output that will last for many more hours. One neat thing about it, is it has a display giving your the color temp and output level for the standard lighting settings and for full RGB, the typical color wheel rotation in degrees, the saturation from 0-100% and the output level from 0 to 100%, all the info you need to log in to repeat the set-up. The F-5 comes with a case, though it isn't large enough for other than the bare light or cable and mounting hardware, let alone the grid and the diffuser. I wish the case could hold all the parts like many of my battery-powered flash do for the flash and its basics. The mounting hardware seems clever but is somewhat limited in usefulness. The ISO cold foot is just that with no way to adjust other than to twist it left or right. The neat little clamp is a double ball head, each with 1/4x20 screws and a wing-nut that can be repositioned to tighten but without enough length to be too useful, especially with double 1/4-inch screws. I wish one end had an ISO cold foot with a 1/4-inch tap to make them more useful for me. If you are looking for an LED panel that seems to nearly have it all for your still, basic video and run-and-gun, the Falcon Eyes F7 may just be the light for you!

Nikon 17-55mm 2.8
This is a workhorse lens for the Nikon DX format. Fast, sharp and a useful range for general shooting, including weddings and groups. On the FX cameras, this lens is still usable from about 24-28mm to 55mm. Shorter and the lens vignettes, especially when the lens hood is used. This is the equivalent of the FX workhorse lens 28-70mm with a little more length good for head shots. Pluses: Sharp and fast; a useable range for medium shooting such as for weddings and reportage. It's a good middle (bridge) lens between the 12-24 or 10-24 and the 70-200. Minuses: Large and heavy, not quite wide enough at 17mm (about 26-27mm FX equivalent), but ample at the long (about 80mm FX equivalent) for a good head shot.
