The best Navy book about WWII: fiction or nonfiction
This is simply the best sea story about World War II yet written, and apart from Hornblower, the best Navy book I have ever read. The Battle off Samar was a small part of the largest sea battle in history. The Imperial Japanese Fleet sacrificed all in a bold attempt to defeat MacArthur's amphibious landing in the Philippines. In turn, the US Third and Seventh Fleets pulled out all the stops to destroy the Japanese Fleet. The battle in Last Stand was a mismatch: Rear Admiral "Ziggy" Sprague's Taffy 3 task group of six jeep carriers and seven escorts against four battleships, six heavy cruisers and a dozen destroyers. Due to blunders on Halsey's part the San Bernadino Strait was uncovered and no air or battle force support was available to Taffy 3. The plucky US destroyermen made smoke and charged the Japanese main body to launch torpedoes. Two destroyers and one DE -- the Samuel B. Roberts -- were shot to pieces and sunk, with heavy loss of life. The skipper of the DD Johnston -- CDR Ernest E. Evans, a 3/4 Cherokee from Oklahoma -- made a second attack with guns only and conned the ship from after steering while badly wounded. Evans was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, deservedly. The brave pilots of the Taffy 3 jeep carriers made repeated bombing, torpedo and strafing runs on the Japanese battleships and cruisers. Two of the six CVE carriers were sunk, with surprisingly light casualties. Most of the aircraft and the other four CVEs survived. The Japanese turned back without achieving their objective of striking the landing force. Although not a Navy man, Hornfischer has soaked up the atmosphere of those times by his careful research, including the battle reports, interviewing survivors and attending ship reunions. He could not have done a better job. This book is on the Navy's professional reading list and rightly so. If you read only one Navy book in your life, read this one.

Remote handset: how to get help
Be careful about being told this item is new, in original box. This item was used, already programmed to another telephone number. The manual included does not tell you how to fix this. But, if you get on you tube with "Program AT&T EL 52203 Handset" there are excellent videos that walk through the key strokes. Be patient and it will work!

    One of Braun's Best
Based on historical facts, Black Fox depicts the struggle of Texas homesteaders against Commanche raiders during the Civil War, when the Union Army largely left the frontier. Aided by a few Texas milita, the homesteaders trail a band who has kidnapped women and children from the settlement. The Black Fox is a freed slave who is intrepid in dealing with the Commanche. Highly recommended.
