Les Vampires (Blu-ray, 2012, 2-Disc Set) Kino Classics Edition

    Fabulous early cinema
Memorable characters, brilliantly inventive plot developments, and an unbelievable stunt. Hard to believe that it dates to 1915 and 1916. Nearly lost (retrieved at the last moment from the trash), the visible deterioration is quite tolerable. Bravo to the restoration team! A must-see for lovers of silent film and highly recommended for everyone else.
Holst: The Planets; Vaughan Williams: Symphony No. 4 (CD, Oct-1994, Koch (USA))

Holst's own performance of The Planets
The composer's early electrical recording of The Planets catches the spirit of the various movements extremely well. I don't usually care for Mars, but here it gets the suite off to an excellent start, taken at a much more rapid tempo than on many other recordings. The Venus is quicker than his earlier acoustic recording, but both present a fine contrast with Mars. Mercury is taken at a suitably rapid tempo. Jupiter is a highlight, both at the start and in the big tune in the middle. Saturn reaches an almost nightmarish climax, giving the impression of Time run amok. The final two movements are also quite good. The disc also contains Vaughan Williams conducting his 4th symphony, but I am not so familiar with that music and don't personally find it as enjoyable as The Planets, but that suite makes the disc well worth having. Even without really modern sound in what is often presented as an audiophile demonstration piece, this is musically one of the best recordings of it that I have heard.

    Excellent earbuds
Very satisfying sound quality for a wide variety of musical styles. Warm, full sound. Reasonably durable. Competitive with much more expensive models and brands.
