Best way to learn how the universe works
This is, by far, the best physics text ever published. I could add a lot of hemming and hawing about 'in my experience', but it is so much better than anything I've seen that I'm confident that I'm not wrong. Paul Hewitt, the author, doesn't treat Physics as a branch of mathematics, but as an explanation of the way things work. He explains things very clearly and concretely, and uses equations mostly to give a sense of how changing each variable changes the result.
This book has been very successful, and many schools have used it at a variety of levels, but it is readable, and effective, simply as an introduction to Physics for any reader. I like this edition better than others since it has some improvements on the original edition, but hasn't been overly laden down with the additions and mathematics that seemed to be added to make the text more useful for standard Physics courses, which make it longer, more cumbersome, and much less inviting.
It is an fun read, and you will learn an enormous amount.
