English Dub SUCKS! Watch with subtitles!
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. My only warning, and I am emphatic about this, is that the English dubbing is HORRIBLE as to content. It has changed the subtle and spiritual message of the film, turning it into a cheap pseudo-Christian "religious" movie with occasional overtones of sleeze! Hardly what it says in the original. I speak both French and Danish, and the subtitles are almost perfectly translated. Watch this film in Danish/French with English subtitles about three times with intervals of a few months between them, to let the meaning sink in. Never once, in the original script, does anyone say "Jesus" or even "merciful Lord." As a practicing Orthodox Christian myself, I was horrified when I watched the movie with English dubbing for the first time yesterday. Real Christianity, as portrayed in the film, where Catholic and Evangelical spiritualities are at play with each other and with the naive humanity of the villagers, is calm, natural, beautiful and reflective. If you are a non-Christian watching the film using the original languages and the subtitles, I think you will be able to relate to it and enjoy it. But with the dubbing, it would seem boring and debased.
