MOZART Don Giovanni (2002, 2-DVD Set) CECILIA BARTOLI Rodney Fill
    May 25, 2021
Unusual production with great musical performances.
The performers in this production are extraordinary. The production itself is non-traditional, and not everyone will like it, but the acting between the characters is intense and captivating, as is the singing. Individual numbers are often wonderful, even though Harnoncourt chooses some extreme tempos. Rod Giflry is terrific as a seductive Don G., Laszlo Pola is a great Leporello, I loved Liliana Nikiteanu as Zerlina, and Cecilia Bartoli is Cecilia Bartoli—not to everyone's taste, but definitely not to be accused of UNDER-acting her part. I find most of the production tolerable, although the end is baffling. Still, this is one of my favorite performances as a musical performance.
Vietnam: A Television History - (DVD, 2004, 4-Disc Set) New Sealed

    Important, vital documentary, still relevant.
This is a story that we need to keep hearing and learning from. Anytime anyone says "We learned the lesson of Vietnam," I tell them I don't think so. What evidence is there? The U.S. and Vietnam were fighting different wars, and we never understood the war they were fighting—part of a multi-generation, hundreds-of-years effort to free their country form outsiders, including the Chinese then the French, then the Americans. The Ken Burns documentary is invaluable, having access to people that were on both sides during the war. But the documentary made soon after the war is important too; we can learn from both. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to understand this terrible chapter in human history.
Frank Martin Concerto 7 Wind Instruments tudes Passacagllia London 448264-2

    Solid performance of intriguing music
Frank Martin is one of the more interesting composers from the mid-20th century. His Petite symphonie concertante has a unique and intriguing sound, with harpsichord, piano and harp soloists. This is a very solid performance of that piece, which is not often heard today. The Concerto for 7 Winds is a fun piece as well. I can recommend this for anyone who wants to get off the well-trod path and explore Martin's music.
