Best forceps ever made
These are my go-to flyfishing tool. It allows me to carry one tool instead of three, and it clips out of the way on my shirt pocket. My gear has been reduced from a whole vest full of gear to just this scissor-forceps, some flies, and a spool of tippet.

One of the best outdoors books ever written
I grew up reading hunting books and magazines. I love stories about the outdoors, especially the ones that are written well, that have a meaning under the surface. Hemingway gets all the press for that, but there are many who wrote as well and one who wrote better.
Datus Proper's stories are all true. They are told around the common point of pheasant hunting, but there is nothing common about them. They are stories of such beauty about life and death, growing, loving, that they are unmatched in hunting literature. Each stands on its own as a complete, well-written story. But taken as a whole they are the story of the evolution of a hunter, the raising and maturing, tempering, chastening. The stories all have meaning, but none are preachy. Each is a tight circle, existing in itself, but having more inside if you take the time to scratch the surface.
The chapters on the particulars of hunting, Armor, Flavor, Guns, Dogs, are all how-to articles that feel nothing like how-to. If you want to know why the English side-by-side is the epitome of grace and efficiency in killing pheasants you don't need to read the history of the development of the English gun trade, you need to read the story of one gun, a gun whose barrels one would not need to check convergence because, "Mr Woodward would have gotten it right." The story of a gun whose lines the maker was a pains to get perfect.
This book, with a single chapter on cooking and a single recipe, is the most concise and comprehensive cook book I have ever found. There is so much in Flavor that translates to deer, elk, duck, any wild meat whose flavor has a depth and richness unattainable in barnyard animals. Bringing flavor out is the trick ("Cooks, like bankers, make their money at the margins"). There are no fancy marinades, nothing to overpower, such things are a waste for well-aged and prepared game. There is just rich flavor beyond compare. That chapter alone is the single most referenced portion of my library.
Datus Proper showed what so many hunters feel in their hearts without being able to put it in words. If you have ever looked toward the mountains or sat down to look over the windswept prairies and felt chastened, if you have ever looked at a dog on point and felt part of an inseparable team, this is the book for you.
If you have someone in your life who loves the outdoors, whose heart is most alive in the field, this book is the perfect gift. I you hunt and have a friend who you think would really like this, get him or her a copy. In my travels around the world I keep one fireproof box with a few treasured items. The copy of Pheasants of the Mind that my buddy Travis gave me in 2001 is one of those items. It is a treasure, its value far exceeding its cost. This book was Datus Proper's masterpiece.

Perfect part
This was a perfect fit for my 1998 Explorer. It makes my door close like it did when it was brand new.
