Naughty Marietta - with J. MacDonald and N. Eddy
As a big fan of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy we were keen to add this to our collection. On viewing it, we were surprised to note the similarity to "New Moon" - even some of the supporting characters were the same. So if you have one you probably don't need the other. However, the music is different and for us that is important. We have enjoyed viewing it several times since its arrival. They are both from the aristocracy of France and went to New Orleans, the French colony in the New World for various reasons. Of course, they meet and fall in love. The scenes in New Orleans are definitely staged - no one is swatting mosquitos! - but guess that wouldn't be very romantic. The costumes are lush and the settings are as one would expect of the transplanted aristocracy. If you enjoy seeing two characters who perform musicals well together, this is worth the purchase. We're glad that we made it.

Great dancing and wonderful repartee between Blor and Edward Everett Horton
The plot is thin, but that did not detract from the superlative job that the actors did. We particularly liked Eric Blor - he is delightful as the valet. Of course, the dancing and report between Astair and Rogers is first class. The music is delightful. It was a delightful evening's entertainment. No doubt we will be watching this one many times over.

Fanny
It is a fairly simple but classic French love story. It is beautifully portrayed by Leslie Caron, Charles Boyer and Maurice Chevalier together with Horst Buchholtz. It is the love story between a young girl and her boyfriend, set in Marseilles. The boyfriend has another love which is greater than his love for the girl. It is the sea. Of course, there is the complication of her being with child when he leaves, so she marries to make the child legitimate. I saw it the first time many years ago and was delighted with it then. I appreciated it more as I am more mature and see it from another angle. The music is rather haunting which is probably why I remembered the film. For those who like classic French romances, done by French actors, you will most likely enjoy it.
