Blacktop Strat, a classy piece of work
I'm not quite sure what I expected from a MIM Strat, especially one that costs 50% more than your basic one, but this guitar exceeded my expectations. The neck relief needed minimal adjustment (2 minutes), and there were no buzzy frets. The fret ends are good, though I'll probably spend some time making them even better, because most of the difference between a good guitar and a great guitar is the amount of individual care, and number of hours of custom detailing. If like me you can do most of that yourself, then most guitars can become really good guitars - the old sweat equity. But this Blacktop Strat is beautiful to start out with. The mahogany body feels Les Paul-ish in its solidity. I prefer maple fingerboards, but I like that this Pao Ferro fingerboard is fairly light-colored, compared to your standard rosewood. The guitar feels good to hold and play, and (IMHO) looks beautiful. I love the 3 humbuckers more than I expected to - nice tone, not overpowering, kind of PAF-like. Overall, I would buy it again, and I'm kind of thinking about getting one of the 2-humbucker ones with the 5-position switch.

You'll love Polara's Halo
So many times we buy a particular pedal for one specific sound. Well, I bought the Polara specifically for the "Halo" sound, which is their version of what I see called "Shimmer" in other reverb pedals. But to my ear the Polara's "Halo" is more subtle, more nuanced, less in your face. As with some other DigiTech pedals, I just found that sonically beautiful. I consider it money well spend, and if this one ever dies on me I'll probably hunt for another one.

Great Little Media PC for Pennies
We use Dell OptiPlexes at work, so I know they're solid little business PCs. I recently experimented with a mini-PC for my media system, for Netflix/YouTube etc. It only cost $137, and had 4GB and a 60GB SSD, but the processor was just too slow, so I returned it. Then I started thinking about how minimal the processor was, and the fact that business PCs had CPUs faster than that five and six years ago.
So I looked around and saw that you can get Ultra Small Form Factor (USFF) PCs like the OptiPlex 780 for peanuts. I bought one with no RAM or hard drive for $67, and added in 8 GB of RAM and a 120 GB SSD that I had already, and loaded Windows 7 Ultimate on it. It has a 3 GHz Intel Core2 Duo CPU, which won't burn your house down but which has PLENTY more zip than the wimpy CPUs in the cheap little mini-PCs they're selling now.
I am VERY happy with this PC for its intended use, which as I said is to connect to a TV at 1080p resolution (the 780 has a DisplayPort connector, yay) and play stored and streaming videos, and surf the interwebs. So I bought the OptiPlex 780, and added my own RAM, SSD, OS, and wireless mouse/keyboard, and I’m super pleased. If I’d bought all the pieces at the same time to build it, I guess it would have come to about $175 plus whatever operating system I liked. It works perfectly with Windows 7, which I like the best though I use Windows 10 and OS X at work, but it would have also worked flawlessly with Ubuntu or Linux Mint. For the minimal money, and for this lightweight purpose, the Dell OptiPlex 780 has great bang for the buck.
