Greatest anthology of American humor from some of our greatest humorists
This book is truly a celebration of how truly funny and influential the Harvard Lampoon was, and still is, in our national psyche. Despite what was a monumental task of sifting through piles of old magazines and photos and hilarious oral histories, the editors did a tremendous job showcasing the stories, cartoons, parodies, and pranks into a easy-to-digest format that lends itself to allowing one to re-read each chapter for hidden gems. Almost as intriguing as the various pieces is the history of their private clubhouse, the Castle. It is no wonder that so many students have tried to compete for selection onto their demanding staff. The older humor is a nice antidote from today's easy-sex joke obsessed comics; humor is the hardest thing to write. It is fascinating that so many famous Americans were members, whether they went onto the heights of comedy (Robert Benchley, Fred "Herman Munster" Gwynne, Henry Beard, Douglas Kinney), literature (George Santayana, George Plimpton, John Updike, Robert Sherwood, John Lafarge, John Marquand) or more "serious" careers (Judge Francis Biddle (US Nuremberg judge), William R. Hearst, George Merck, Elliot Richardson). This is truly pure "comedy gold!".
