    Depp brings it to life.
This is quite a lively little blockbuster but it only really springs to life when Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) steps ashore from his sinking boat on the quay at Port Royale. From that moment, the action changes into a bizarre whirlwind of thrilling swash-buckling including a memorable sword-fight between Depp and Orlando Bloom, a running sea-battle between pirate galleons and a showdown between Redcoats and Captain Barbossa's ghostly skeletal buccaneers. The music is wonderful, underscoring all the lively action.

Murderous plants v. helpless human prey.
Classic novel about a world in which blinded humans struggle to survive against carnivorous plants - the Triffids. An early and very influential stab at the post-Apocalyptic genre, with a brave hero in Bill Mason as one of the few sighted survivors trying to protect as many victims as possible and resist the siren call of fascist totalitarian solutions by a growing number of local warlords in a Britain where social order, transport etc. has collapsed. Ignore rubbish film versions and read the brilliant original.

    Reach for the Sky.
I'm a recent convert after picking up on this series from one of my children. They kept telling me how good it was and I soon got hooked. I guess I liked all the references to the Westerns I saw as a child - lots of gunfights, horses, banjo music and train robberies - plus a lot of Science Fiction without the cliches. There are NO aliens, space is silent, law and order is almost non-existent and the heroes make up their own rules as they go along. The cast is just about perfect, with lots of strong characters drawn together for mutual benefit. (My favourite is definitely Jayne!) The Serenity is like a big ol' farmhouse with one kitchen where everyone gathers around the table to work out their next heist. Capt. Malc is just about in charge aboard the rattling spaceship, outwitting robbers, con-artists and the Military. There are some nasty moments and a few shocks but it's just sad they only ever made the one series and a feature film (Serenity).
