Great update to the original Contour HD Model 1300
1 of 1 found this helpful I've owned a couple of Contour HD Model 1300s. The first worked fine until the power switch worked it's way loose. Took the think apart and re-soldered the switch on and it worked great for another couple of years until the battery leads broke. Purchased a used Model 1300 to replace it. It had a melted record switch and another faulty power switch. I replaced the record switch with that from my first Contour HD. The power switch will turn the camera on but it is nearly impossible to hold the switch down long enough to turn it off. Purchased a used Contour GPS because it seemed to address many of the problems present in the Contour HD. The hinged back plate is certainly an improvement as it closes more securely and provides a more stable base for the power button. Once it is locked closed, it stays that way. The second big improvement is the re-designed record switch. It is much easier to use with a gloved hand and provides much improved tactile feedback. The blue-tooth connectivity is a nice feature though somewhat limited in it's capabilities. It's great to check where the camera is pointed and review the video and sound settings, but doesn't quite cut it as a real-time video monitor. Don't really use the GPS though it's another feature that some will find handy even if it does reduce the battery life noticeably. Like all sport cams, the Contour GPS is not perfect. My biggest beef lies with the re-design of the battery housing and securing mechanism. The actual battery housing seems to be a millimeter or two narrower so the Contour Branded batteries that fit perfectly in the Contour HD fit so snuggly in the GPS that you have to pry them out with a paper clip or small screw driver. In addition, the battery latch-release does not retract enough to provide enough clearance to remove the battery without a fight, Luckily the aftermarket replacement batteries that I purchased are just narrow enough to fit without causing any issues. They go in easily and a simple push and twist on the release pops the battery out almost effortlessly. My second beef is more of an inconvenience than a deficiency in the camera. When I tried to connect it to the same computer running Windows XP and Contour Storyteller the previous device driver for the Contour HD was different than that required for the GPS. I could not connect the GPS until installing the proper device driver. Fortunately connecting it to my laptop running Windows 7 worked without needing to search for an updated device driver. The last little gripe has to do with the fact that it still lacks something to connect directly to a monitor or HD TV. Even my Polaroid XS100 has a mini-HDMI port and the firmware to play your HD Videos on any HD TV without requiring any other hardware other than the cable to connect them....

A silent Cooler!
The fan is very quiet and works very well. It's so quiet that I could not hear it until a Windows cumulative update was being installed. I was glad that there was also plenty of thermal paste shipped with the fan. Removing the old fan also removed some of the old thermal paste so it was really easy to properly remove all the old thermal paste and apply the new.
