Linksys WRT54G Version 3. Old But Gold. Understand why
Attention! There are **17** versions of the Linksys WRT54G router (browse wikipedia for the term "wrt54g" and see how to find out the model and its features). This old 802.11 b/g wireless WRT54G version 3 router features a Broadcom BCM4712 216 Mhz cpu, 16 Mb RAM memory and 04 Mb flash (firmware) memory, besides 02 detachable (type RP-TNC) antennas and 04 ethernet 10/100 Mbits ports. Its firmware (internal program) can be replaced by others based on linux whether free ones like dd-wrt, tomato, open-wrt or commercial ones like sveasoft's talisman, allowing increase in the transmission signal (which can be accomplished switching the antennas for better ones as well), connection control ("traffic shapping" of p2p protocols, msn, skype), bandwidth control, hotspot service, "signal bridging". It's a good choice for the average customer who wants a stable router capable of a strong signal (meant to cross walls) or for those who need to share a network connection without quarreling about speed drops.

Works in Linux (Ubuntu) without effort
Good webcamera. It has a CCD sensor for capturing images (the same type used in digital cameras), which provides better quality than the CMOS ones. I was able to make it working in Linux without much work (I'm running ubuntu 9.10 karmic 64 bit) and I just had to load the module for the phillips webcam with "modprobe pwc" using the shell console. In fact, the captured images were better running Linux (especially when it comes to low lighted environments) than XP, although I could say that both did good. By turning its lenses, I could adjust its focus to the point to see the lines of my fingerprints and hands when I put my limb closer to the webcam. Face detection works fine, although a bit slower in my opinion. Quality of sound capture is good too and there was no delay in XP (I found some in Linux). In general, I'd give an 8 (out of 10 grade scale).

Fair Router - Good Signal but few options to set up
I bought a second handed one to use at my parents' house and route a wired connection pulled from a neighbor to a room (that is, subdivide a LAN). The wireless signal is strong enough to cross several walls and even be detected outside in the garden (I'd say it may cross at least 1.5 yards of concrete walls having to travel by a sequence of halls and rooms from its source and certainly would have a better performance in an large open room like an office or a factory / store). The disadvantages are the lack of options to set up the transmission power (I couldn't find it) and WPA2 (it supports WPA and WEP security protocols), the impossibility to control band traffic (either via MAC addresses or IP) of the users, the lack of a tool to measure the signal of other wireless network (in order to find out the channels used in the neighborhood and choose another with less interference or just to know the strength of a known router whose signal one intends to replicate via WDS function). Another drawback would be the impossibility to replace the antennas, which are not detachable (however as I pointed before its signal was strong enough to meet my needs so I didn't mind the lack of this feature). It was very easy to set up and the menu is quite simple and straightforward unlike many other routers, which may be a headache for the every day user to config by themselves.
