Good alarm, with some good feature, but a couple drawbacks
Good product. The LED escape light is very bright, which could be very useful in smoky situations. Sure the cover slightly wobbles but otherwise it's good. It's loud, and can wake most people up, now sure, some people won't be able to hear it, but they'll most likely wake up to the bright light that may alert them. It's hardwired with 9V battery backup, so you have 2 sources of power whenever you need them. For this unit, it is good, but there is a drawback to this that most people don't like, that being the mounting bracket. Now sure, it's just a bracket, but you have to like, cut out the screw inserts with a razor or something, which I think is just bad design, at least for people who have sensitive hands, or for elderly people trying to install this as well (which I wouldn't recommend). This unit is hardwired as mentioned earlier, so if you don't feel comfortable wiring up your alarm, get an electrician to come do it.
If you don't need a hardwired alarm like this, but still want the escape light, I suggest getting the Kidde i9080, which is a 9V-Powered unit, but there will be some drawbacks. For starter's, you may need to change the battery more often, as it's constantly running off of that, whereas the i12080 (this) runs off the house wiring mainly, and when it's disconnected or the power is off, it uses the batteries to back it up for the loss of A/C power.
Now, this unit is meant to replace it's older counterpart, the Kidde 1285, but as long as you have the breakouts where you put the screws removed, you can basically install this over any old alarm you wish to replace. Again, as mentioned before, if you do not feel comfortable wiring up the alarm, contact an electrician, but if the old plug is the same style as the new plug, do not use the old plug. It has older plastic, and thus, it is more brittle, and the teeth that hold in the plug will eventually break off, which may eventually lead to the alarm being accidentally disconnected from A/C power.
Overall, I give it a confident 4 stars, as this alarm does have a bright escape light, to possibly alert people who are hard of hearing, and a loud horn to wake even some deep sleepers, but the bracket design is just, nah. Overall, I recommend this unit.
