Great Footage
One of the best things about this video is that there is no attempt to make gunmen out of shadows in photos or otherwise solve the mystery. It does not dispute that Oswald was the killer (it was filmed in 1964). The producers intention, very successfully in my opinion, was to capture not just the visit and the assassination itself but to give the viewer a feel of what life was like that day by showing other news of the time and film footage totally unrelated to the assassination like school children in class.
We are given rare insight into the president on the road as he is shown in Florida a couple of days prior to Dallas and San Antonio the day before so it is actually more like six days in November but it are the four days from the assassination to the burial that are memorable and historic.
It's very down to earth and does its best to provide an objective account of the day with either actual footage or film of witnesses such as Wesley Frazier leaving his home and driving the route to work just as he did the fateful morning he drove Oswald to the Texas School Book Depository while telling the viewers in a voice over about the experience. Reactions of the news from the "man on the street" to Eisenhower and Goldwater are shown as is reaction from throughout the world.
I didn't particularly like the 50's style of narrating and music for drama, especially during the shooting of both Kennedy and Oswald in which a still photo was posted during the moment of the shot for what seemed like forever. Because of this I would rate it 4.7 or so but I rounded up to 5/5 on my rating.
Perhaps the best scene of all which has excellent picture and sound quality is of Kennedy's arrival in Dallas. I paid $29.95 for this VHS on order from Suncoast about ten years ago and this part alone is worth the price. In what seems to be live continuous feed, Air Force One is shown making its landing, the Kennedy's step out, approach the crowd to greet and shake hands, enter the car and begin the motorcade. The drama is priceless - you almost get a sense you are watching coverage that is happening right now! I have never seen this complete footage anywhere else.
If you want an historical account and authentic feel for being there, not an analysis of evidence or speculation, then you definately want this video. My understanding is that, as of August, 2006, this two hour black and white documentary is only available on used VHS but should be released to DVD.
