Ample Power, Virtually no distortion, Sony did it right on this one in 2000
I was in the market for something Sony made that had ample power with low distortion. I Have been a E-Bayer for years!
I have been "lurking" on the Sony ES receiver pages for awhile. Now that I have owned a handful of newer/older and vintage Sony's, I can honestly say, this is my favorite one. It has really good power and virtually no distortion. Many of the newer Sony Models have way more distortion than this unit. I dont get it.. You would think the newer models have lower distortion, but check the specs on the newer ones.
I was told that the V555ES was the same thing, and after owning them both, thats not the case. The V555ES dosent compare.
The DA555ES, reproduces sound amazingly in the 5.1 mode, awesome for the Olympics (Watching SOCHI winter olympics)I love the Ample power it has (able to move infinity studio monitors effortlessly) and plenty of power left over for the subwoofer. The digital inputs are great for connecting the components. IMO, this blows away some seperates that cost 4000$ or more. I can honestly hear sounds on the TV, and in Music I never heard before. Its that amazing on the sound reporduction spectrum.
Sony really had it right with this one, and its big Brother the DA777ES. If you are in the market and can find one of these units, I would highly recommend. As close to distortion free as I can find. I now am the proud owner of 2 DA555ES's, and plan to keep them for years. I tried to substutite other ES models for this, and just don't like the sound. (distortion, Lack of low end bass.)
Only negative I can say about the units, is they run faily warm under loud music. Its good to keep them in a well ventalated area. Also, the remote control (LCD) is easy to use once you get the feel for it.
As for how this compares to other units. I have owned everything from Yamaha to Onyko to Pioneer Elite and Kenwood as well. Again, this is my favorite model.
Also if you want to listen to Heavy Bass in your music, turn it up to +10db, this will have no problems moving even 15" woofers. Like the bass boost too!

Not worth over 50$ in my book
This is a pretty weak receiver. To be calling this a ES model is a joke. Sound is very distorted compared to other receivers. Low power and high distortion. Plus a cheap build quality. If you want a ES sony, get a DA555, or DA777, you will like these much better.

Massive power, Earth shaking Bass. Clean and distortion Free sound.
Monster unit 5/5 Stars. I deal daily with receivers, and this is my Personal unit. If you dont want the HDMI, 6.1, 7.1, 9.2 ect, then this is for you. It decodes 5.1 and Has the sound of a 2000+ seperate.
I use this with 12" cerwin Vegas, and even at 4/10 on the volume knob, you can hear it about a block away. Amazing sound, and unaudible distortion. These are well worth the money. Definately not for a Apartment or Condo where you have close neighbors thats for sure, I had it clocked at almost 106db at volume 3.5
