Outstanding Shostakovich 6th and Very Good Shostakovich 5th.
This is one of the CDs released in Caentani's complete transversal of the Shostakovich symphonies. It has Shostakovich's most popular symphony the 5th and the overshadowed and underrated 6th. First of all this has got to be one of the greatest 6th's ever committed to CD in the digital age. The competition is Haitink, Petrenko, and Jarvi in my mind. The Largo or first movement of the 6th symphony should be between 17-19 minutes in a good performance. In this performance it is about 17 and half minutes. Not only the timing, but the overall feeling for this performance is right on and the only other performance that I think is more deeply felt in Jarvi's version. The final two movements are allowed to breath more than usual and only Haitink's timings would be better, but then again Haitink doesn't have the pinache or fire that this recording of the 6th has. With the 5th symphony there is much more competition. The first movement is gauged well. The scherzo is good and the Largo is O.K.. The finale is more driven than many versions and comes in the wake of the book Testimony and perhaps isn't as anti-climatic as fans of that book would hope. But for me it is just the right compromise between Bernstein's whiplash 1959 recording on CBS and Rostropovich's effort on DG. In conclusion this CD has an outstanding Shostakovich 6th and probably a what I would consider a very good 5th. Recommended.

    Bargain DSCH 7th.
Nanut is a highly underrated conductor. This Shostakovich 7th ranks very highly. There are only two others that I can think of that are better. And most of all the price is right. A great value!!!

    There is no Island
Time 2019. So this video dates itself. The premise is believable. Clones for spare human parts. It is somewhat similar to the Matrix. Humans are breed to be identical and are called products. Very suspenseful. Action too. 9 out of 10,
