Lithium is the way to go
I use lithium batteries outdoors for my remote temperature sensors and have had no problem with their durability. Ordinary batteries do fine and are cheaper, but who wants to go out in the dead of winter to replace batteries? I expect that battery technology may come up with something even better soon, so stay tuned!

Content very useful, though somewhat dated
I've been on Google+ for a year, but find -- as per usual with me -- that I'm not using all features as well as I might. The copy I have seems somewhat dated, but is still a useful resource. Google tweaks things all the time so look for the latest edition of any advice book you buy.

Squirrel proof if your squirrels are on the dumb side
Our neighborhood has very smart squirrels. If we had only known, we would have picked one inhabited by really stupid rodents! Oh well, if your realtor can't find you a really dumb bunch for you to live with, this feeder does present the average squirrel with some challenges. The weight of the squirrel closes the feeding ports.
Rather than being suspended by a central strand of wire, mine came with standard pail handle suspension. With this kind of mount, a smart gray squirrel will grasp the suspending wire and extend its body down the length of the feeder to the port below without touching the trigger. Mounting the feeder high above the ground and 18" from any post, pole or other support will eliminate those squirrels who defeat some of these feeders by clinging to nearby supports to minimize their weight on the trigger.
Better than many, but you may still have that valedictorian who fattens while your birds wait patiently to feed on the remains.
