The Shining Steel Of Love Lights a Dark Moment In History
The Scarlet Pimpernel began as a 1905 novel which has received multiple treatments by filmmakers. This 1982 film stars the undisputed queen of made-for-TV movies, Jane Seymour. The story is simultaneously snarky and serious, filled with both humor and pathos. The setting is the French revolution and the populist excesses of that time in history.
The plot turns on the fact that our hero, played by Anthony Andrews, is a seriously misunderstood nobleman of the English royal court. This misunderstanding threatens to crush his budding romance with Seymour. The villain is played by Sir Ian McKellen, two-time Academy Award winner, best known for his role as Gandalf the Grey. As the action unfolds, Andrews' character (The Scarlet Pimpernel) is slowly revealed to be considerably more than his public reputation would support. The love story is sincere and genuine, culminating in arguably the greatest sword fight in cinematic history. Highly recommended!
