An Inside Look at the World of an Elite Marathon Runner
1 of 1 found this helpful Many of us have had dreams of greatness at some point in our lives, but few of us have the opportunity, motivation or talent to realize that vision. Marathoning is the inspirational story of Bill Rodgers, from his shy high school days spent catching butterflies in local New England fields to becoming the top-ranked marathon runner in the world (1975, 1977, 1979). Rodgers - who won both the Boston ('75,'78','79,'80) and New York City ('76,'77,'78,'79) marathons four times each - and Joe Concannon, team up to give the reader an inside look at the world of a world class distance runner.
This book is a well-rounded journey that is sure to inspire any runner, and includes important elements such as training routines, event preparation, racing strategy, course analysis and a personal look at most of the world's major marathons.
The golden age of American marathon running and the 'Running Boom' come alive again as do many issues that remain today. From the running trails in Massachusetts to the White House, from the crowded streets of New York to the organization of Japanese society, Marathoning has it all.
I have been running for over thirty years, have run 13 marathons myself, and was once a national class athlete, and in my opinion Marathoning (published in 1980 and updated in 1982) is still the best book on the world of running I have ever read.
If names like Rodgers; Seko; Viren; Shorter; Waitz; Benoit or Salazar or mean anything to you ... you need to pick this book up!
