I should have done my research on this product
Griffin, the product's developer states on the carton it for nano and other ipods however my nano stated when I plugged mine in that it was not supported 🙄. However, it works as a radio so to avoid the hassle of returning it, I will simply use as radio only with no pass through of my nano's other features.
You live and learn...at least this item can be connected to my ipod unlike the other Griffin product that I originally ordered that claimed to work for ipods but clearly the connector wouldn't attach.
All the ipod 5 I see available on ebay have the same connector (dock) as mine yet that connector would not work

Authentic at a great price!!!
Since it was so inexpensive, I was mostly curious to see if this was an authentic new product as advertised.
Surprise...it is!!!
