The Civil War: a Narrative Shelby Foote
1 of 1 found this helpful From the outset I must confess that as of yet I have not read the entire three volume series. I fully intend to do so. My original purpose was to gain a more detailed knowledge of the engagement at Gettysburg prior to a visit there. Consequently, I started in the middle of his series, and fully acknowledge that doing so has some shortcomings.
My choosing Foote to guide my understanding simply stems from my finding him to be the most credible authority in the Burns Civil War documentary. His writings do not suffer from the rewriting of history nearly as much as those of our current crop of revisionists whose aims are to bend history to comply with their own current politically correct agendas. Further, he had the advantage of having interviewed those who in their younger years listened to the actual participants in the conflict, who were also the people who could reflect on the facts and attitudes of the times.
Packed with details and insights, it is a series which definitely deserves space on any Civil War historian's bookshelf.
