In the room - live sound
Have this MFSL cd. May be the best Mofi I have. In the room - live. Said to be beaten by the SACD, perhaps little warmer. All I can say is this is the Mofi to get. Also great songs by Muddy Waters. What is interesting is the band was not recorded at the same time, if read liner notes. Magic of mixing, but again so good it is 'in the room' live sounding. Highly recommended.

Very good sound quality
Mainly liked American Pie, the classic title song, and also Vincent, which I had heard before, but had forgotten. American Pie is incredible, if you listen carefully to the words, in its ode to the passing of Buddy Holly, and the album is dedicated to Buddy Holly. Vincent is also an impressive song, referring to painter Vincent Van Gogh. Other songs I found good, though not great.
I must emphasize that I wanted to try the SHM Japanese version, as this different material is supposed to result in cleaner, clearer sound. Just listening off a simple portable sony discplayer, and I found the sound quality to be impressive, the cleanest among a number of other discs I played. The instruments and his vocals seemed more separated, almost 3-D off the headphones, and the sound just jumped out at me. Actually had to lower the volume due to increased dynamics. Will be interesting to try this on actual speakers, as definitely impressed.

DVD alone worth the price. Double cd long, but very good
DVD is only black & white, but is worth the whole price if you can get it to work. Need PAL capability (I had with trusty Magnavox DVD player, not better Sony Bluray player) but you can output in NTSC which is what finally worked best. The DVD is a touching statement to a virtuoso artist who effortlessly goes from ballads to jazz to blues songs. It is wonderful to see her happy as she is greatly and humbly appreciative of the audience applause. It is sad knowing what is coming-- her death in 10 months, when you see and hear how amazing she was and yet was undiscovered. The blues and jazz at times just like the cd can be edgy but the ballads are a revelation. Time after Time is a beautiful rendition right within her range. But the best is clearly her wonderful version of Under the Rainbow. She bends and shapes every note perfectly, putting enormous emotion behind the song. So sad again knowing what is coming and yet hoping she is happy somewhere over the rainbow as she prophetically sings. In terms of the double cd, it can get long. Certainly the original 'Live at Blues Alley' I always thought was great, especially Stormy Monday, People Get Ready, and her amazing, better than Sting, version of Fields of Gold. I like her Bridge over Troubled Water, but it won't beat Art Garfunkle. Nor have I understood her liking Tall Trees in Georgia. But that is what is great about the original; there is something for everyone in jazz, blues, country, folk, and ballads. The most versatile singer, in my opinion, and this double cd just gives more songs especially for the fan to enjoy that could have easily been on the original.
