Broken China * by Richard Wright (Pink Floyd) (CD, Oct-1996, EMI Angel (USA))
Dec 09, 2015
2 for the price of 1
As a Pink Floyd fan in the 70's and 80's, and in my opinion, Richard Wright was the heart and soul of the band, but known as the "quiet one" (like George Harrison, eh)? BROKEN CHINA is the second and last solo album of his career. It is far from great but once you become aware of the background of the lyrics focusing on depression (both his wife and himself), the record assumes more importance knowing that Roger Waters brow-beat him to death and ultimately forced his "retirement" from music. (Waters did the same to Nick Mason). Most Floyd fans know that David Gilmour revived Wright and Mason's career for the MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON tour which restored their self-confidence as performers and contributors. The "2 for 1" reference is that the cover is by designed by Storm Thorgerson, one of the finest and most creative graphic designers of the 1960's up until his death a couple of years ago. Storm has published 8 books and I recommend that you purchase any one of them in addition to this CD.

COMING HOME BLU-RAY ZHANG YIMOU GONG LI
Apr 27, 2016
The best Gong Li yet
Gong Li and Zhang Yimou reunite once again. Gong Li is the only Chinese actress that can totally consume a role and bring tears to your eyes, in this case, China's Cultural Revolution between 1966-1976. The mystery to me is why this film did not make the short list for last year's Oscar nominations, best foreign film. My only thought is that the Academy continues to censor Zhang Yimou due to pressure from the Chinese Communist government. If you have followed Zhang's career, you know that all of his early films (Red Sorghum, Raise the Red Lantern, Ju-Dou, etc.) were banned from the Chinese mainland upon their original release. I also don't understand Sony Classics and their lack of promotion for COMING HOME. I saw the film in China two years before its release in the U.S., and at that time, the release was in New York and Los Angeles exclusively with very limited release in a few other markets about a month later. I saw the film in Denver and it was yanked after one day. I was the only person in the audience. I blame Sony Classics, not the sterling performances by the actors. And the soundtrack CD is superb. Lang Lang is featured on piano along with the Chinese Philharmonic Orchestra. Pick up this DVD and soundtrack CD before they disappear totally with the exception of inflated prices on Bay. As a note, the special features are useless unless your speak Mandarin.
