COLLINS SEWING MACHINE PLASTIC DUST COVER #C45
Jun 11, 2016
Good enough for keeping dust out
Review for: COLLINS SEWING MACHINE PLASTIC DUST COVER #C45 I bought two... I needed something to throw over my machines after I get done sewing, when I know I'm going to sew again in a few hours. I have the covers that came with the machines but I don't like messing with hard covers all the time, or those cloth covers that have all the pockets with accessories (too clunky) so it's just easier to throw a thin plastic cover over them sometimes. I use the "real" covers when I'm not going to be sewing for a while. These are functional for keeping most of the dust out and are easy to use. My only complaint was that they are very short. They don't cover down past about presser foot level so dust could still get into the bobbin housing. So, not ideal, but not bad, and certainly better than not covering them at all.
JUKI MO654DE Portable Thread Serger Sewing Machine
Jul 24, 2016
Very pleased
I bought this serger because I've heard good things about Juki sergers, the price was very reasonable, and I have a Juki sewing machine that is AWESOME. My sister (who has a Viking serger) helped me set it up and get it threaded... we watched the CD that came with it, and it wasn't hard to thread. The stitches looked good enough to me (but what would I know?... nothing to compare it to) but my sister RAVED about the stitches. She said they look better than her Viking's stitches. Now she is determined to buy a Juki coverlock machine. Anyway, I'm very pleased with my choice.

JUKI HZL-25Z Multi Pattern Mechanical Domestic Household Sewing Machine

Juki HZL-25Z review: Good, for what it is.
Juki HZL-25Z Review: I wanted a small machine to carry to classes and to use when my Bernina was being serviced. I didn't want to spend a lot. I do mostly straight and zig-zag stitching so didn't need anything too fancy. I also tend to like front-loaded vertical bobbins... in my opinion they make a nicer straight stitch, but you do have to hold the thread ends when starting to sew to prevent a jam. (My experience.) I decided for $199 (new) it was worth giving the Juki a try, as I've heard good things about Juki in general. Pros: It's lightweight, but not TOO lightweight (anything super light was probably made a little too cheaply)... I think about 14 pounds. It comes with a nicely designed hard shell carrying case... super cute, as is the machine itself. As I tested the various stitches, I found that it makes an ABOVE average looking straight and zig zag stitch, nice and even... consistent (and I'm picky). That may be in part because it's a mechanical machine and not an electronic one. (Electronics have their positives, but I think mechanicals tend to form nicer straight stitches.) Threading was intuitive, as was winding and inserting a bobbin. If you haven't sewn before, the instruction manual was not outstanding, but reasonably good. It comes with a couple of extra presser feet (see the sales info for details) and the usual package of needles, lubricating oil, spool end caps, etc. I like that the power cord and foot pedal are all one assembly, not separate. Less chance of losing one or the other. Neutral: I don't use the automatic needle threader so I can't comment on that, but it does have one. Cons: It is somewhat noisy, although to a beginner, they probably wouldn't mind since they have nothing to compare it to. (I'm comparing to a mid-level Bernina, which really isn't fair.) It shakes around on the table as I sew because it's just so light. Lots of vibration, although to be fair, the table I use isn't super firmly built, but my Bernina doesn't shake on it. As far as being easy to use, it was easy enough. When selecting decorative stitches, some things aren't real intuitive so I did have to consult the manual to figure that out. The specialty stitches... well, they didn't work well for me. Machine jammed twice while doing a satin stitch, and some of the others just didn't look very good. Summary: All in all, not a bad little machine for the price. Might be good for a beginner or for someone like me, just wanting a spare machine for classes and occasional use. But I suspect it's only going to perform well for straight and zig zag stitching. Don't count on it to do a good decorative or satin stitch. And if you're looking to do quilting or any serious sewing, aim higher.
