Last Man Out : Glenn McDole, USMC, Survivor of the Palawan Massacre in World...
    Mar 11, 2020
Good book on one mans survival of the Palawan POW camp and Massacre
I recently finished both Last Man Out and The Great Raid on Cabanatuan by William Breuer. Both were very important accounts of POWs in the Philippines during WWII! These events need to be taught more thoroughly, and the survivors of Japanese POW camps honored as the heroes they are. Last Man Out had a very different writing style then Great Raid on Cabanatuan. Last Man Out was definitely a biography focusing on McDole and his experiences in Palawan at the prison camp there. It is a great account by one survivor, but the author used few other sources. As this is meant to be biographical that is fine, and once again an amazing story that I was honored to read. The Great Raid spent a great deal of time discussing pre-surrender situations for American troops on both Corregidor and Battaan and then also the various guerilla and underground groups in the area that aided the Cabanatuan prison camps. The author used many more sources and first hand accounts. If looking for a book specifically discussing Palawan as I was, this is a good quick yet heart breaking read. If looking for something more in depth on the Philippines and the prison of war camps as a whole The Great Raid would be a better fit.
