Get help with a hacked account

If you think someone is trying to take over your account – or already has – we'll work with you to secure it. For your protection, we may place a temporary hold on your account.

If your account might have been compromised, first check if anyone with access to your account made changes to it, but then immediately takes steps to secure your account if:

  • You might have provided sensitive personal information in response to a spoof or "phishing" email
  • You think someone has hacked into, or is trying to take over your eBay account. Signs that your account has been taken over include seeing listings or bids that you didn't make, or noticing that your password has been changed without your knowledge

If you believe your eBay account has been compromised, we recommend changing the password on your personal email account as well. Your email account password should be different from your eBay password.

Dealing with account theft

Whenever there is suspicious activity related to your account, it's important to act quickly.

If you can't sign in to your account, contact us immediately. If an unauthorized person has used your account, we may temporarily suspend it until it's secure again.

If you can sign in to your account, follow these steps:

  1. Change your password immediately.
  2. Verify your contact information and payment details. Check your contact information, your shipping addresses, and your payment information. If anything was changed by the person who took over your account, change it back.
  3. Check your active bids and listings in My eBay to make sure they're yours. Contact us for help with removing unauthorized fraudulent bids or listings.

If someone has used your eBay account without your permission, you'll want to contact your credit card company and your bank, and you may also want to file a police report.

If you believe your account has been compromised, contact us immediately and we'll help you secure it.
