Accepting other payment methods

Sellers can accept a variety of safe and secure payment methods, including credit cards, Paypal, and, if you’re a managed payments seller, Apple Pay and Google Pay. You'll be required to offer one of these forms of payment in most categories. We’ll automatically select payment methods for managed payments sellers.

Depending on the category, you can also accept:

  • Bank-to-bank transfers or deposits
  • Bank and personal cheques
  • Money orders
  • Cash on delivery
  • Payment on pickup, including cash

These payment methods apply to Canadian listings only. For payment options in other countries, you should visit eBay help for that country.

Accepting payments by personal or cashier's cheque, bank-to-bank transfer, or money order is only available in certain categories. If you wish to accept these payment options, you’ll need to select them when creating the listing. Additionally, you can’t ask buyers to use a payment method that is not allowed on eBay or to use a payment method you haven’t included in your listing.

We don't recommend accepting cash, except when a buyer is paying on pickup.

How to accept other payment methods

When creating your listing simply select the methods you want to accept in the Payment options section of the listing form.

If you’re a managed payments seller, eBay will automatically select payment methods for you. If you want to accept payment options other than credit card, Google Pay, Apple Pay, or PayPal, you’ll need to select the other payment options you want to accept in the payment options section of the listing form.

If you're using payment methods where the buyer needs to mail payments, such as cheques or money orders, make sure your address is up to date.

Seller protections and other terms

Our seller protections, including the eBay Money Back Guarantee and similar buyer protection programs, don’t cover offline payment methods that are completed outside of eBay, such as cash, cheques, bank-to-bank transfers or deposits, and money orders. This means eBay can’t offer assistance if payment disputes, such as chargebacks, are raised in connection with offline payment methods.

You should never accept overpayments from buyers, especially if the buyer asks you to repay the overpayment. Requests like this are often part of a cashier's cheque scheme.

In addition to credit cards, PayPal, and Apple Pay and Google Pay with managed payments, sellers can also accept cheques, money orders, bank transfers, cash on delivery, and payment on pickup for certain categories.
